Am I going bald? Early signs of male pattern hair loss

Updated

Most men who ask this question are asking early, which is good. Male pattern hair loss is common, it is genetic, and it is most treatable before much hair is gone.

Here is how to tell normal changes from real loss, without spiraling over every hair in the sink.

What is normal

Losing around 50 to 100 hairs a day is normal. Hair grows in cycles, and every hair eventually falls out and is replaced.

Most men also get a "mature" hairline in their late teens or 20s: the whole front rises slightly and evenly, by about a finger width. That alone is not balding.

Early signs it is more than that

  • The temples keep moving. Corners that deepen year after year into an M or V shape.
  • Thinner, finer strands at the front or crown. Pattern loss shrinks follicles, so hairs come back shorter and wispier before they stop.
  • More scalp showing. Especially under overhead light, in photos from above, or when your hair is wet.
  • A crown that looks like a swirl of scalp. Often noticed first by a barber or in a photo someone else took.
  • Hair that will not grow as long as it used to at the front.
  • It runs in the family. On either side, including your mother's father and brothers.

Signs it might be something else

Some hair loss is not pattern baldness, and some of it is fixable. See a doctor if you notice:

  • Round, smooth bald patches (possibly alopecia areata).
  • Sudden shedding all over, often 2–3 months after an illness, surgery, crash diet, or major stress (telogen effluvium, which often recovers).
  • An itchy, flaky, red, or painful scalp.
  • Tiredness, feeling cold, or weight changes, which can point to thyroid or iron problems.

A doctor can order simple bloodwork. More in ruling out the root cause.

What to do this week

  1. Take baseline photos: front with hair pushed back, both temples, and the crown from above. Same light, same angles.
  2. Take the free Norwood check to get a rough stage.
  3. Read up on the two proven options, finasteride and minoxidil, and book a doctor or low-cost telehealth visit if you are considering a prescription.
  4. Get a haircut that works with your hair in the meantime. See haircuts for thinning hair.

The worst thing you can do is nothing. Waiting a year to "see what happens" usually means losing hair that is much easier to keep than to regrow.

Common questions

At what age do men start going bald?

It can start any time after puberty. A meaningful share of men notice changes in their 20s, and about half of men have some pattern hair loss by age 50.

Does wearing hats or washing every day cause baldness?

No. Pattern hair loss is driven by genetics and the hormone DHT. Hats, shampooing, and hair products do not cause it, though very tight styles can cause a different kind of loss called traction alopecia.

Can stress make you go bald?

Major stress can trigger temporary shedding a few months later (telogen effluvium). It does not cause pattern baldness, but it can make existing thinning more noticeable for a while.
